Philips & DENG engage school children in Ghana with simple health and well-being message

Students taught by Philips volunteers about healthy lifestyles while having their classrooms equipped with solar powered lighting

Local school children at the Lungo, Adaboya, Yagzore and Yinduri primary schools in the Bongo and Tongo districts in Bolgatanga Upper East Region of Ghana have become the first kids in West Africa to take part in the Philips SimplyHealthy@Schools program.

In addition to the Simply Healthy @ Schools activities, Philips and its partner in Ghana, DENG, have also provided 4 schools in the Upper East with solar powered lighting solutions.

SimplyHealthy@Schools is a global Philips initiative aimed at educating and inspiring school children between the ages of 8 to 12 years old to live healthier and happier lives. Through fun, educational activities, Philips volunteers work with the children to discover how clean air, water, oral hygiene, light, and exercise lead to improved physical health, better results in school and a cleaner environment.

“We are delighted to have our school chosen to be part of this project. The children will learn good health practices and also make learning more interesting and easier. I cannot stress enough our appreciation to Philips and DENG Ltd for this kind gesture,” expressed Mr. Lokko, Lungo Primary School Head Teacher, Bongo District.

“Lighting is a very important part of our daily lives; in fact one can never over emphasize how the Tongo community is grateful for our inclusion in this laudable project. This will go a long way to improve the lives of our children and teachers as a whole. Thank you Philips and Deng” said Hon. Bernard Kuiribuu – Assemblyman and District Education Officer, Tongo District.

Established in 2009, SimplyHealthy@Schools was created by Philips out of the company’s desire to share its knowledge and expertise related to health and well-being with a wider audience. By educating children at a young age about health and well-being, and introducing them to new technologies such as solar lighting, Philips aims to equip children with the skills necessary to make positive and healthy decisions for themselves and their communities.

“Philips is committed to improving the overall quality of people’s lives,” says Henk de Bruin, Head of Sustainability at Philips, “and our SimplyHealthy@Schools program is a major part of that effort. This is our way of engaging our own staff and giving something back to the community and we fully intend to develop the program further throughout the continent.”

In 2010, Philips SimplyHealthy@Schools program was rolled out in 38 countries, touching the lives of 63000 children at 660 schools.  This year, in 2011, the program will be conducted in over 54 countries worldwide.
